What we collect and why


We require the following information when you create an account: your name and email address. You also have the option of providing us with a profile pic and a short biography (bio).

Your name, profile pic and bio are visible publicly. You may provide fictitious data for this information.

Visitor logs

In addition, we obtain the following information when you visit out site from a web browser:

  • your IP address
  • when you accessed the site
  • what you did on the site
  • the browser that you used
  • the referer i.e. the link that referred you to the site, if any
  • if signed in, the user who performed the activity

If you use the API, we record

  • the user whose access token was used
  • your IP address
  • when the API was used
  • the resources that were accessed
  • the user agent, if any

The command-line client uses the API, so information recorded with its use is same as that of the API.

We use this information to 1) improve your experience, 2) watch for any malicious activity.

The visitor logs are retained for a maximum period of 90 days.

Task and project related information

Any information about your tasks and projects is explicity provided by you to us. That is the central activity you'll perform on deftask and this information is retained indefinitely until you delete the corresponding project, or the user or organization account to which the project belongs.

Backups and data retention

Backups are retained for a maximum period of 90 days. If you delete a project or an account, its information is immediately deleted from the live database. However, it will be retained in our backups until the retention period expires.

Third parties

We use the following services to host our website and associated services:

  1. Amazon Web Services (AWS) to host the application and database
  2. Cloudflare for DNS and as a CDN
  3. Sendgrid to send transactional emails
  4. Mailchimp to send marketing emails
  5. G Suite is where we receive any emails you send to us (e.g. to

We DO NOT include any third party scripts (tracking or otherwise) on our website.

We permit user-generated content to include images from and links to third-party sites. On pages displaying this content, information may be sent to these third-parties. This information includes:

  • your IP address
  • the browser that you used
  • the URL on from which you saw the image or visited the link

Access and control over your information

You may send an email to support ( to request an archive of information we've collected about you.

To delete a project, you can visit project settings, whereas to delete an account (user or organization) you need to contact support.
